Fat Shaming or an Honest Mistake?
Closed

Retail Clothing Store Forever 21 has gotten backlash for recently including diet bars from the Atkins Diet to customers online orders. Many of these bars were distributed and received by woman who had ordered plus sized clothing.

Customers were not impressed and took to twitter saying they were offended and felt fat shamed.

Forever 21 has apologized saying that from time to time they surprise customers with free test products in their orders and that they were included in all online orders - for all sizes.

This may have been an honest mistake, but I understand the feelings of these women. Many women struggle with the expectations of what society believes is an acceptable weight/size and clothes shopping is not easy. Not every plus sized woman is on a weight loss diet. Plus sized women can be healthy and attractive at the weight and size they are.

If, as Forever 21 says, these bars were included with all orders, then it was poor judgement to say the least. Planning to distribute these weight loss bars to all online orders, they would have known that plus sized women would be receiving them also.

Perhaps these 'freebies' shouldn't have been considered or included at all in any of their orders. Shame of Forever 21 for bad marketing.

If I have a problem with self esteem attached to how I look or what my weight is, I would be much more easily wounded than someone of healthier weight. I’m not perfect, I am slightly overweight. I know I have to work at keeping my weight down as I have some anxiety/depression and I am a stress/emotional eater who is trying to find other ways to deal with stress/sadness/low self esteem OTHER than eating. I know my emotions and body are owned by ME. I may FEEL shamed. I might feel angry or saddened if I received a “diet” bar when I wasn’t expecting it. I don’t know that I would say anything to the distributor other than perhaps the suggestion that if they do this sort of thing, have an explanation enclosed. Example: instead of calling them “diet” bars, call them a healthy snack or health bar. “SURPRISE! We are providing all our customers with a treat! Enclosed you will find some tasty, yet healthy snacks for you to enjoy. Please give us your feedback on the taste, texture, your opinions/feelings, or other thoughts/concerns at this website (insert website) and we will send you other free items occasionally in your orders to test for us! Thank you for participating in this sample survey.” I do agree that it’s a little bit the customers and a little bit the distributor/shipper.

Perhaps not intentionally shaming- but not overly thoughtful either. If you want to promote healthy living and eating a flyer with coupons often works. It also gives the impression it’s a wide spread campaign and not a target to a specific individual

I think it was a good thing to do ; people need to get over themselves. Being overly sensitive mostly hurts yourself

They knew that not all women are of the same size and that body can be a sensitive issue for some women. they knew that and should show empathy
