Is banning alcohol a good idea?
Closed

It is no secret that alcohol can be dangerous if consumed in too heavy quantities. During the pandemic, countries such as South Africa, India and Thailand have gone to the extreme of banning the sale of alcohol due to risk of higher intakes caused by the stress of being the crisis. Alcohol simply “took the edge off”. But for people with problems restricting their intake, it could mean excessive consumption leading to violent and damaging behavior – also towards others.

In South Africa, the researcher Bongiwe Ndondo tracks violence against women and says that after the ban on alcohol, “A lot of women are telling us that their communities have never felt better. They’ve never felt safer.”

The South African four month ban lifted in the middle of August and since then emergency visits to hospitals has doubled with 85% being related to alcohol consumption (car and motorbike accidents, stabbings, shootings and assaults.) There has also been an increase in cases of domestic violence.

However, Harvard University economist Jeffrey Miron explains that alcohol bans actually can cause even more problems since alcohol trade is driven underground. These environments can be violent and lead to people overdosing and getting into trouble. Also people in the alcohol industry have lost their jobs and find themselves in precarious situations.

What do you think about the alcohol bans? Were they a good idea and what could be done in the future to stop alcohol consumption from going overboard? Tell it in the comments and influence your world!

Banning alcohol seems like a great idea, but obviously didn't work in American prohibition, so why would it be successful now?

If all these negatives are happening, alcohol isn't causing it, but it is a good excuse ?? People are using the booze to justify being garbage !!

it is sad but the struggle of alcoholism is real. Many can not go cold turkey. Should be open

When Covid first hit, our province and a neighbouring province had different views as to whether liquor stores should remain open or closed. In the end it was decided they should remain open with limited hours and number of people. Alcoholism is a very big real problem. To anyone that is addicted or is an alcoholic, not being able to get this "fix" can be just as damaging resulting in violence, domestic abuse or use of other drugs and black markets. They need to stay open, but limited.

One of the most widely used products in the world just like caffeine - will never happen - people will resort to the black market or make their own.

There would be a REVOLT and people would be breaking down liquor store windows. Not a good idea!

When Covid hit the North, the liquor stores stayed open, with reduced hours for a month. The alcohol problem there is so severe, health officials made the decision to keep the 2 liquor stores open. To have a large portion of the population having the DTs during the pandemic would be bad fr everyone.
