Pencil Sharpeners
Closed

Do you have a pencil sharpener? I keep one in an art bag along with a putty rubber and a selection of pencils. I also have a lot of crayons, not children's ones but art ones that are upwards of a pound each and that was twenty years ago, last night I went to sharpen some and the sharpener didnt work at all. What an idiot I felt when my grand daughter said ' if you pick that broken off pencil lead out there's not a problem!' I now know my eyes need testing just another thing I've put off to avoid physical contact.

We have plenty but still have trouble finding one when we need one. Where do they all go?

It's amazing how many pencil sharpeners are rubbish! It never pays to get a cheap one. I too have been putting off an eye appt.

I use a scalpel for pencil sharpening as I find they break less easily and you get a better point:)

Our favourite one was bought years ago when I was at school but has now sadly gone rather blunt. We have others but the pencils don't always fit in them very well. So we bought a battery powered one. You have to hang on to it for dear life while it wrecks your pencil leads and shortens your pencil by several inches. I used to love the ones that screwed to the edge of your desk (back in the good old days) where you put your pencil in and simply turned the sharpener by using a small handle, very simple. The good old simple ways are often the best.

I have one of the pictured kind, and another designed to take flat carpenter's pencils. In the visitors' centre at Brimham Rocks, we keep (or did, pre-lurgy) paper and dozens of coloured pencils to keep children amused, along with a couple of pencil sharpeners. One summer's day when I went up to check that everything was in order, a middle-aged lady was sitting there busily sharpening all the pencils. She explained "My daughter and grandchildren are outside somewhere, and it's much too hot for me, so I thought I would do something useful."

I have one with a handle and when the pencil is inserted a simple clamp holds it firm while a rotating screw blade sharpens it,I have loads of pencils and very much enjoy sharpening them.
