One of the primary characteristics of FASD is difficulties or challenges with executive functioning. Do you know about executive functioning?

One of the primary characteristics of FASD is difficulties or challenges with executive functioning.
Executive function and self-regulation skills are the mental processes that enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully. Just as an air traffic control system at a busy airport safely manages the arrivals and departures of many aircraft on multiple runways, the brain needs this skill set to filter distractions, prioritize tasks, set and achieve goals, and control impulses.
Executive function and self-regulation skills depend on three types of brain function: working memory, mental flexibility, and self-control. These functions are highly interrelated, and the successful application of executive function skills requires them to operate in coordination with each other.

I have some knowledge and understanding of the challenges of FAS. I have worked with Social Development and have seen the unfortunate children that have been born with FAS or have entered the Foster Care System with these challenges from no fault of their own. It's sad and heartbreaking and carries a certain amount of stigma for them. I hope you are coping well :) Reply
