Gongs
Closed

Have you ever owned or worked somewhere that had a dinner gong? I did a waitressing job in the 1960s and I hated banging the gong to say meals were served, I wasnt much good at the job either as I burned a guests ear on a hot soup bowl! I got into trouble but the guest still left me a tip when he went home after a weeks holiday, he left me £5 a lot of money to me, but my boss took £2 of it! she said I should be more careful, but she always gave me a roast meal on Saturdays, left overs but most welcome. Picture of a gong rejected.

Yes, Mary, we have a dinner gong ! We bought it as a bit of a joke for when Mum came across for (for example) Christmas Dinner. We still have it, and like it very much, though with just the two of us now, do not use it. It is now, more or less, an ornament.

I like gongs even though the violent striking of one at a stag gathering in a Yorkshire country house hotel in 1967 nearly got us ejected.
Mrs B was once a domestic bursar in a University college and the gong was always used to summon the students to meals, often it was her job to d9 this, something she very much enjoyed.
