The seals need a safe place to protect their young. Mud flats and shorelines were used by seals to rest and nurse their young. Development along the shoreline has taken away these havens and we are building right up to the water, so there are no safe places away from people, dogs and wild animals. In my area, the seals would rest on log booms (large flat floating logs), but our logging and sawmilling is gone along with the natural shorelines. Our naturalists are looking at building a safe place for the seals (a floating island?, a log boom just for seals?, a protected area?).
